SCANZ official position
SCANZ has no formal position regards a possible SCA Principality for New Zealand. This site is a collection of ideas, discussion documents, possibilities and plans which may or may not one day lead to an Principality being formed if there is a desire by the members to do so. There are many different aspects which are being discussed and any major decisions will be put out for formal polling of the members before anything gains any formal status; including whether or not to have a Principality at all.
A Principality
- is an SCA group consisting of several smaller groups within a Kingdom, e.g. the groups in New Zealand
- has its own Royalty known as the Coronet or P&P (Prince/Princess in whatever combination suits the people in the role), and a few officers to focus on supporting and growing the SCA regionally (NZ has for many years already had equivalents to a few of those officers, such as NZ Exchequer)
- is still part of the Kingdom with the usual access to running Kingdom events, being Kingdom Officers, getting Crown visits, aspiring to become the Crown...
- forms when regions have a strong local identity and interconnection, and when it makes sense administratively and should improve the game
Moving to an NZ Principality is a big change with many pros and cons, involving a lot of thought, discussion and planning. This is especially true for NZ because there is strong support to also try for Alternate Coronet Selection as part of the process.
A move to Principality will only happen if the populace clearly desires it and after several key but relatively straightforward steps are taken - see the Process section and the Roadmap PDF). This could take months or years, and should involve as many people as possible -- our discussion began in 2019, and continues.
